What to Wear for Your Legacy Portrait...

We thank you in advance for taking the time to prepare for what will become your family’s most enduring and treasured heirlooms.

Be Stylish and Dress Up
Think of this as your family’s day or night on the town, where everybody looks, feels, and dresses at their best.  Choose timeless clothing with character, personality and style.

Your Clothing Should Fit and Flatter
Nothing will make as much difference in how you look as the fit of your clothing.  Most children look best at a size or two smaller than expected.  Try on clothing ahead of time to make sure everything is truly a proper fit (especially for your kids).   If you aren’t sure, it probably isn’t the right size.

Bring Multiple Options for Everybody
Please bring 3 - 5 different wardrobe options for each family member.  Because not everything that feels right photographs well, choice is essential to your successful session.

All Clothing Should be Black or Very Dark
Every piece of clothing should either be entirely black, or very dark on a grayscale.  Dark clothing keeps the focus on your children and family.  Colors don’t clash in black and white, so that black jacket will look just fine with navy pants and dark brown socks.  If you aren’t sure if it’s dark enough, it’s probably too light.

Let Your Family Shine
Everybody should be well rested and well fed, especially the kids.  You can’t hide a bad mood, or fake a good one.
Pay attention to the details!  If you can see it, the camera can see it, too.

Essentials for Everybody
• Textures add dimension and interest.
• Barefoot is often best for kids under ten, but shoes count for everybody else.
• Eyeglasses should have a non-reflective coating.
• Dark blue or black jeans work on almost everybody.
• Feel free to bring that favorite stuffed animal or musical instrument.
• If in doubt, bring extra options.

Essentials for the Ladies
• Dresses almost always photograph well.
• Natural makeup appropriate to your wardrobe is usually best.  This is not the day to try something new.
• Manicures and pedicures are recommended.
• Jewelry adds dimension, and can be as bright as you like.
• Little girls are adorable in party dresses, and shiny and sparkly look terrific in dark tones.

Essentials for the Gentlemen
• Coats and jackets are essential for the men.  Options run from suits and sport coats to leather jackets.
• Dark jeans work well with jackets.
• Layering adds depth and dimension.
• A dark dress shirt or t-shirt looks great under a jacket.
• Coats, jackets, cable knit sweaters and heavy canvas or denim shirts are also strong choices for boys.

What to Leave at Home
• Clothing with white, light and mid-tone elements just won’t make you look good in our portraiture (no matter your skin tone) and can distract from your children.
• Patterns, stripes, and large logos are distracting.
• Polo/golf style shirts aren’t appropriate.
• Avoid casual cotton pants.  Jeans or slacks work better.
• Don’t put a style of shirt under a jacket that doesn’t belong there, such as casual cotton or short sleeved.
• Avoid the cliche of having everybody wear the same basic outfit.
• Rolling up sleeves or pants can’t fix clothing that doesn’t fit properly.

A Successful Selection of Clothing
The dark tones and colors of this clothing are just right for our studio and will make you look your best.  Limit mid-tones and patterns (the blue shirt on the right will actually photograph as a very light color, and would only be worn under a coat or jacket).

An Unsuccessful Selection of Clothing
The tones and colors of this clothing are far too light, aren’t appropriate for being photographed in our studio, and won’t be flattering.  Just having a few dark options is not enough for your session.
